Birth Control Options

In Michigan, women can obtain birth control from pharmacists, a doctor, or other licensed health care professional. Take Control of Your Birth Control - Michigan is a state program that provides free contraception and STI prevention supplies to all Michigan residents. Supplies include condoms, over-the-counter emergency contraception, and over-the-counter oral contraceptive pills. These and other options are described below.

Birth Control Pills

  • How it works: Different hormonal pills–estrogen and progestin pills or progestin-only pills– work to stop ovulation.

  • Effectiveness: 93% Effective.
  • Frequency: Take daily.

Contraceptive Patch

  • How it works: The patch has the hormones estrogen and progestin. The hormones in the patch stop ovulation.

  • Effectiveness: 93% Effective.

  • Frequency: Replace weekly.

Contraceptive Injection

  • How it works: Contains the hormone progestin. Progestin stops you from getting pregnant by preventing ovulation.

  • Effectiveness: 96% Effective.
  • Frequency: Receive every 3 months.

Birth Control Implant

  • How it works: The implant releases progestin into your body that prevents you from getting pregnant.

  • Effectiveness: 99% Effective.

  • Frequency: Lasts up to 5 years.

Vaginal Ring (NuvaRing)

  • How it works: The ring works by stopping sperm from joining with an egg.

  • Effectiveness: 93% Effective.
  • Frequency: Put in and take out once a month.

Copper (non-hormonal) IUD

  • How it works: Prevent pregnancy by changing the way sperm cells move so they can’t get to an egg.

  • Effectiveness: 99% Effective.

  • Frequency: Lasts up to 12 years.

Hormonal IUD

  • How it works: Releases progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone, that thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.

  • Effectiveness: 99% Effective.
  • Frequency: Lasts 3-8 years.

Permanent Contraception

  • How it works: A surgical procedure that either closes, cuts, removes entirely, or inserts a tiny coil into your fallopian tubes.

  • Effectiveness: 99% Effective.

  • Frequency: Lasts for life.

Emergency Contraception ("Morning-After Pill")

  • How it works: Works to prevent pregnancy by delaying or preventing ovulation.

  • Effectiveness: 99% Effective.
  • Frequency: Can be taken up to 5 days after unprotected sex.
