3 Phases of Menopause

Perimenopause
The transitional phase leading up to menopause, which can affect your menstrual cycle and cause fluctuating hormone levels. Symptoms can include:

Irregular periods

Hot flashes and night sweats

Mood swings, irritability, anxiety or depression

Sleep disturbances/insomnia

Vaginal dryness or discomfort

Decreased libido

Breast tenderness
-
Difficulty concentrating (“brain fog”)

Menopause
The point at which a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months. Symptoms can include:

Continued hot flashes and night sweats

More noticeable vaginal dryness

Changes in sexual function or discomfort with intercourse

Emotional fluctuations (can intensify)

Sleep disruption continues

Postmenopause
The years following menopause, where symptoms may subside but health risks related to decreased estrogen persist:

Vaginal dryness and discomfort (may worsen without treatment)

Urinary symptoms (urgency, infections, incontinence)

Bone thinning/osteoporosis risk increases

Weight gain or metabolic changes
-
Some hot flashes may persist but usually lessen over time

Higher risk for cardiovascular disease due to lower estrogen
